Notes |
- At eleven years of age Joe went down the pit in the coal mining tradition
However his father was employed on pit maintainence and brick laying and his sons were able to follow becoming self employed and leading on to house building. Joe learnt the bricklaying trade in the hardest of all schools building the tall factory chimneys which were such a feature of industrial Britain at that time
He sold insurance collecting money door to door, and eventually set up in business as an estate agent Knowing how to build a chimney or repair a roof and how to tell if a property was sound proved an excellent basis for the business and he prospered
He was also a religous man a staunch Methodist and he became a local preacher
As his business grew he was appointed secretary to the chamber of trade Throughout his life he retained a keen sense of fun and the ability to be at ease with all manner and rank of men. If he went out to post a letter he came back full of interesting chat, just like a news- paper his wife said
When his son Aubrey grew up he joined his fafher in the business and was if possible more successful than his father maintaining the family reputation for honesty and integrity
On retirement Joe handed the business over to his son Aubrey.
