- Ellen was born 11th Oct 1903 at Shadwell in the East End of London "within the sound of Bow Bells"
Her father was Arthur Adlington a Methodist Minister originally a miner in Nottinghamshire Her mother Fanny Blythe Utting died in the flu outbreak after the War in 1918 and Arthur subsequently remarried
As a Methodist Minister moved every few years she spent the first 30 years of her life in a variety of places including Glasgow ,Barrow, St Georges Chapel Cable St in the East End(1914-20) Norfolk, Doncaster(1924-27) Liskeard and Ashby-de-la-Zouch Ellen was a member of a lively and talented family with three older brothers and a younger sister
She met John Burgoine when her father was Minister at Oxford Place Church In Doncaster between 1924 -1927 Ellen was in the choir with John's sisters Doris and Evelyn John also did design work at the Church
They married in Sept 1933
Sons David and Allan were born in 1937 and 1941 respectively
When John moved to London to find work in 1947 that was a difficult time financially for them and Ellen got a job at the Western Hospital in Doncaster to help out She continued working in London initially at Hammersmith Hospital and later Derry and Toms, then Barkers both major stores in Kensington High Street Both parents made considerable sacrifices to enable their sons to go to Southampton University
My wife Joan was particularly fond of Ellen for her support and help when our daughter Helen was born in Queen Charlottes Hospital Hammersmith
Ellen died on 12th March 1980 of carcinoma of the right breast
