Notes |
- Robbie worked on the family croft at Wartle and served with the Gordon Highlanders during the Great War His first posting on mobilisation was to Keith A number of post cards sent to his mother from there have survived also one or two from France. Correspondence was not his strong suit at that time
He was badly gassed in the trenches and after the war his health was not good He was advised to seek a better climate and this may have played a part in his decision to emigrate
He emigrated to N Z in 1924 taking his daughter Isabel, born of Nora Rettie, and his wife Mary (ms Emslie) with her offspring George.Alexander
The marriage to Mary Ann Emslie in 1922 took place at Insch Public Hall Robert is given as a farm servant age 25 usual residence Baldyquash Cottages Mary Ann is 26 of East Cranloch Ythan Wells Her father is described as farmer (deceased ) The Minister is Daniel Alex Forrest and the witnesses are Alexander Lyon of Meikle Wartle and Helen Dyce from Bogs of Raich Forgue
They therefore sailed as a complete family unit although the composition was unusual in that both had a child before marriage but both children bore the surname Alexander They sailed on the SS Ionic in 1924. (John and Margaret Burr also sailed with them but under a different arrangement)
On reaching NZ they travelled to Palmerston North to join "auld Granny"--Isabel Alexander
Robbies first job was in Hawkes Bay working as a farm labourer They moved from there to Hacketts Road Ashurst and later to Kopane west of Palmerston North Between jobs they lived in Palmerston North at the Esplanade entrance in a property leased from the City Council and whilst there, daughter Isobel had her first son William Robbie and his wife brought him up when Isobel left to marry Walter Mortenson
Eventually they bought their own farm at Ashurst just over the bridge on the main road before the Manawatu Gorge. Robbie milked cows for the town milk supply and Mary kept a large flock of hens selling eggs to the Egg Floor She loaded her bicycle with them and pedalled the 9 miles into town
When Robbies health deteriorated due to the onset of arthritis, he was compelled to give up farming. They moved to the town of Palmerston North buying a house in College Street He and Mary had no children together
