Burr's leaving after visit to Aberdeenshire
Jack Burr and his wife Ella were leaving U K for New Zealand along with their two children Charlie and Ella
Seeing them off were Charlie Burr and his wife Lizzie
Charlie was head gardener for the Fingask family of that name and estate. Also seeing them off was my mother Isabella with myself in her arms aged nearly three years and daughter Olive.
Charlie Burr looks to be in some danger in losing his legs were the train to arrive unexpectedly.
Jack Burr was taking the photo so does not appear Charlie Burr made picture frames which were in Olives custody and I was later able to transport them to NZ so they are now with Ella

  • Notes
    • Isabella was born at North Sunside Wartle and worked locally as a domestic servant before going to join the munitions workers at Gretna Green during World War 1 She was called home when her sister Elsie married. She had a child Olive born 16 Jan 1921
On the 17 June 1922 she married Henry Gray He worked as a farm servant for farmer George Anderson at West Fingask near Old Meldrum They were near neighbours to Charlie Burr and his wife Lizzie at Fingask lodge
Henry suffered a stroke which abruptly put him out of work and his family out of house and home. He survived although severely paralysed on his left side
Isabella's parents, now retired, came to the rescue and took us all in As a small boy I looked on this terrible event as an upturn in our affairs I now had two grandparents at their house at Baldyquash This too was an improvement on the farmer's cottar house Besides there were other children to play with nearby
Isabell now became chief bread winner working as cook, cleaner, washer woman or occasionally house keeper for local farmers when their wives gave birth Henry made a slow but determined recovery and although partially paralysed, was able to contribute, working as a gardener and general handyman at the local shop
Isabella and Henry had three children, myself, sister "Beldie" and late arrival, Alexander
Henry suffered a recurrence of his stroke and died at the comparatively early age of 49 in Dec 1948
His unmarried brother Alexander (Sandy) having retired early due to an accident at work came over to help out and take on some of Henry's gardens and somehow forgot to go back
Isabella and Uncle Sandy moved to Oyne buying the cottage Daisybank between them in what became a successful and harmonious partnership
Uncle Sandy, as he was known to all the family, died in 1985 aged 92
Isabella died in 1994 having moved firstly to Huntly to be next door to her son Alexander and his wife Alice
I regret to say that this move was not a success Isabella decided to enter a nursing home "Weston House"in Keith where she ended her days
