Notes |
- Lynette Wright informs me that on her recent visit to Invercargill (Feb2004) She visited the library to see if they had any material on Woodlands where William Alexander went farming in NZ She located the school records where both his children attended and a brief summary of their progress is attached to their entries
William emigrated to NZ in about 1874 Reputedly he met his future wife on the boat Married in Dunedin 27th May 1881age 31 at Knox Church gives his present residence as Dunedin and usual residence Woodlands (near Invercargill) his profession farmer Family legend has it he went into business as a shopkeeper in Winton South Island NZ at some later date
Margaret Trotter a Woodlands resident compiled a booklet "Early Woodlands and Today" which gives an insight into the lives and conditions of those we now refer to as early settlers
The New Zealand Society of Genealogists in their "Return of the freeholders of New Zealand Oct 1882" list William Alexander of Woodlands Southland as owning 102 acres of land worth £710. Additionally in an index of bankruptcies in NZ 1881 to 1940 the same society mentions" A William Alexander farmer on Waimea plains near Riversdale filed for bankruptcy on 7th Aug 1882" These dates rather clash and we cannot be sure that we have the same William Alexander
Moved to Palmerston North in North Island (date unknown ) and continued in business there owning three shops
On the occasion of his parents Golden Wedding,(1899) William and Isabella journeyed to Scotland bringing with them a handsome marble clock as a present. In the nature of things the recipients of such a present do not have long to enjoy it. However the clock is still in use having pride of place on the mantle shelf at my sisters place in Cullen some 100 years later
I feel that we are indebted to William for the Golden Wedding photogrsphs which were taken on this happy occasion and which have come down through the generations to us
Buried in the early settlers grave yard in Palmerston North and also commorated on the family headstone in Rayne kirkyard
